King and Gowdy, Solicitors were formed in 1977 having evolved out of the firm of S & R Crymble which was established in Belfast in the mid 1890s. The date of the formation of King & Gowdy coincided with a time when civil unrest was at its highest in Northern Ireland. The centre of the City of Belfast where the firm was then situated was ringed by steel security barriers with army check-outs at the permitted entry points. Clients were finding access to their solicitors more and more difficult.
The late Thomas King and Colin Gowdy saw that the time had come when the interests of their clients would be best served by moving from the confines of the Belfast City Centre to an out of centre location. Commercial premises with on site parking for clients on a main distributor road with easy access to the centre of Belfast, the Law Courts and Belfast City Airport were located and the firm moved to its present location in March 1978. The relocation proved successful and as a result the offices were doubled in size some ten years later to meet demand from an increasing client base.
The firm reflects the present community in Northern Ireland. It has a very wide client base not only in Northern Ireland but also throughout the British Isles and further afield. It prides itself on the fact that many clients who, for differing reasons, have left Northern Ireland, still return to the firm for legal advice.
While the main spheres of legal practice are commercial real property, insolvency, corporate law, banking and commercial litigation, it still maintains a very large private client base and offers those services which are needed to private clients in the 21 st century.
The firm is very protective of its client’s privacy and confidentiality and refuses as a matter of principle to roster the names of its clients. The firm keeps to the forefront of technological developments adopting them to the practice whenever possible.
In 2009, work was begun on an extensive redevelopment which is due to complete by the end of the year.
